Artist Statement
Drawing the human figure has always preoccupied me, the majority of sketches I do are rejected before a chosen study is worked into with a variety of mediums to add pattern and colour. I have very recently been studying collagraph printing as a means of adding pattern this is still work in progress. The experimentation is translated to fabric and developed further.Painting with thread and cloth.
I hand dye transparent fabrics and group them in all their various hues around me as I work, this palette of colour is layered together giving depth to the image. Repeatedly stitching over these layers disrupts the surface creating a 3D effect unachievable by paint and traditional graphic mediums alone.
Parts of the work are meticulous in detail, other areas are more spontaneous and fluid, I like the contrast, I aim to distil and simplify the image.
The fascinating textural qualities produced by manipulating, layering, and stitching cloth are endlessly explored.
