Artist Statement

Brave and bold; sea and land scapes created in oil. Capturing nature’s elements, its extremes of light and dark, its stillness and ferocity.

Sarah J Cooper was born in Sheffield and now lives in the Hope Valley with her family and where her studio/gallery is based. The enjoyment of not only living and working in such a beautiful part of the World, but also exploring the UK’s coastline and moorlands give Sarah unlimited inspiration for her art.

Sarah is a complete self-taught artist. Her work has developed quickly over the past 6 years from first picking up a paintbrush and in her words: “Giving it a go!” Now a full time artist, Sarah’s artworks are created through a series of sketches (en plein air), notes and photographs, but mostly through the continual observation of her surroundings and experiences. Larger pieces are then created from these memories back in the studio.

Working predominantly with oils and applying the paint with palette knives, brushes and her hands Sarah creates layers and textures which give the paintings a sense of movement. Sarah strives to keep her work evolving by pushing boundaries with experimental techniques and the use of other mixed medias. Works are created on various surfaces; paper, panel and canvases all in different sizes depending on the subject. As well as original large art pieces Sarah has a range of mini original paintings, to suit a smaller budget, a variety of art cards and fine art prints.

Commissions are occasionally accepted after discussions between the client and artist to ensure the correct vision can be achieved. Sarah is more than happy to chat about any preliminary ideas for commissions during the Open Art event where a dedicated studio appointment, to chat in more detail can be arranged.
