Artist Statement
Taking as a starting point the systematic removal of status and the subsequent erosion of rights of sectors of society by organised capitalistic structures, Jannetta interrogates the knowledge systems that reinforce and undermine manipulative capitalistic knowledge production.By employing materials and processes associated with the marginalised status of certain groups, Jannetta challenges the hierarchy of historically established assumptions imposed by the Western dominance of the art world value systems.
Employing techniques to facilitate learning through materials and process Jannetta’s practice circumnavigates established art markets. She holds workshops and tutorials at her studio, art groups, and YouTube Channel. Her tutorials initiate curiosity and exploration, offering the potential to appreciate and take pride in historically marginalised processes, e.g. sewing, textiles, paper and collage. Creative interrogation through haptic lateral investigation offers intuitive knowledge production with the potential to break down barriers and permit pride and prowess to undervalued processes and their producers. Her followers, mainly mature women, relish the permission these tutorials gift.
In a series of works laced with metaphoric signifiers, Jannetta weaves and entwines threads, paper collages and traditional paper-making crafts into textured abstraction—handmade books of contemporary lace and collage knot perception within the scribbled text of endless becoming.
